Professional Footballer Rehab

Ethan Cummings

In rehab / return to sport - I believe if I don’t return players faster and generally more effective players than they were before - then I haven’t done my job. It’s that simple.

Ethan suffered an ACL injury and underwent reconstruction (patellar tendon graft) in late 2022. I started working with him in summer 2023 as he entered the ‘end stage’ of his rehab journey and his return to sport.

On paper, Ethan was near enough ‘ready to go’:

  • RoM & joint function fully restored
  • ITK @ 60 degrees: 390% BW
  • SL Drop Jump (20cm): >0.7 / <10% LSI
  • Seated Calf Iso: >1.8x BW
  • Standing Calf Iso: >3x BW
  • SL Iso Squat: >3.4x BW / <10% LSI

It was clear from initial screening however he was still unwilling to accept load quickly, through range on the involved side during maximal deceleration and cutting tasks. This formed a massive part of his final stages of rehab (among other things).

This is a prime example of just how important the coaching eye is in rehab. - you can’t just rely on numbers.

Ethan returned in December and hit the ground running - he was absolutely flying. He didn’t just drop back into training and games - he BOSSED it.

As well as getting to geek out on marrying up movement and numbers, the main reason I love rehab is you get to spend more time with the athletes. You build really strong relationships and you’re in it with them. You share their highs and lows.

He’s a top, top kid and he’s going to go all the way.

"I came to Alan with ACL reconstruction surgery and some problems that i was facing before i went with him was knee flection and being able to accept force and weight through my knee as i had started the process of running and plyometrics again. From working with him, i was massively able to improve in these areas and he got me to a really comfortable place where i was able to get back to how i was pre injury and be even better in certain aspects. Whilst we did rehab it was also made as enjoyable as it could be through his easy going and fun personality which was a big help during the tougher days of my injury. I would say that is a big reason why i would recommend Alan to anyone who is going through a lengthy time out of a sport as he is very knowledgeable in his field but also has his ways of putting a smile on your face."
